In 2012, 4,743 pedestrians were killed and an estimated 76,000 were injured in traffic crashes in the United States. Pedestrian fatalities in 2012 represented an increase of 6% from 2011 and were the highest number of fatalities in the last 5 years.
In 2012, more than one-fifth or 22% of the children ages 5 to 15 who were killed in traffic crashes were pedestrians.
A majority of the pedestrian fatalities, 70%, occurred during the night-time in the United States.
