It’s Thanksgiving, the deadliest holiday to drive

It’s Thanksgiving in the US, Millions of Americans are preparing to make their way across the USA for the Thanksgiving feast this week, and the overwhelming majority of them 90%, according to auto club AAA will travel by automobile. An estimated 46.3 million Americans are traveling an average of more than 50 miles (80 km) to sit around a table with family members and enjoy turkey.

According to the most recent data available from NHTSA’s Fatality Analysis Reporting System, there were 764 crashes involving a fatality during Thanksgiving 2012. (About 400 of them involved motorists.) In comparison, there were 654 crashes involving a fatality during Christmas that year.

There were nearly 50,000 non-fatal car accidents that Thanksgiving holiday, too.
